#18. Community Water Surveillance

Water quality assurance is an objective of the water supply department in every state as per the national mandate. This objective is further accelerated by each state department via various SBCC initiatives. In an era with health and hygiene as the vital players to reduce the drudgery towards the maintenance of a standard quality of life. It is important to encourage pro-active knowledge towards individual and community resources.

Thereby, a unique series of sensitizing women on water quality testing is initiated across Punjab. The objective of water quality testing is to accelerate the participation of women in water quality testing using FTKs and H2S, vials.

Mandate has been issued for IEC Specialist and CDS that on every Tuesday and Thursday they will cover 2 villages in a day. They will take 5 samples per village and upload them on WQMS. The test examines the chemical and bacteriological aspects of the water. It tests the level of fluoride, nitrate, hardness, PH level and alkalinity of the water.

Women from villagers responded positively to these tests. Besides the testing of water, the women were also sensitized about the importance of health and hygiene issues, the value of potable drinking water. Women who are educated and have shown interest in this activity were identified by the social staff. The target beneficiaries were Aanganwadi workers, Asha workers and progressive educated women of the village who were given this training. This initiative is a way forward to laying the foundation of good health of the community with the active participation of the community, especially women.
