#12. Aspiring to all-round sustainability

Fatehgarh Channa is a well-liked village of block Sangrur, stationed on Sangrur Dhuri road. It is 8 km away from Sangrur. With a settlement of 336 households, the village had to get their water supply from the nearby village, Deh Kalan. Water collection remains a gender-specific role to date leading to additional problems faced by women regarding the water supply. They face issues, like poor pressure of water, intermittent supply at odd hours. Gram Panchayat approached the water supply department and submitted a request that independent waterworks should be constructed for the village. The technical and social team conducted Aam Ijlas addressed Gram panchayat and the whole village, apprised them about the features of the scheme and about the work to be carried out in their village of the water supply scheme. Gram Panchayat and villagers responded positively to the scheme. Various IEC activities helped in awareness generation among the villagers resulting in the formation of GPWSC, consisting of 11 members and collection of beneficiary shares of Rs.239000/- The scheme was covered under Nabard.

Ms Rajwinder Kaur, sarpanch and chairperson of GPWSC actively participated and supported her team of panches and members in construction work. OHSR with a capacity of 50.000 Litre was completed with an approximate cost of Rs. 12 Lac. Water connections were given in every household and institutions i.e. School, Aaganwari centre and Gurdwara Sahib. The villagers supported the social team in controlling water wastage and unanimously supported Gram panchayat in deciding times of supply hours. The villages slowly increased supply hours. The village had a supply of 10 hours. The consumers have also supported the scheme by paying the bills on time. The transparent system of records maintenance and bookkeeping helped in building trust among the community. Consumers especially women are very satisfied and happy with the scheme. The GPWSC along with the consumers are running the water supply scheme successfully and sustainably.
